I could spend years telling the stories of all the dogs we get to meet. But wouldn’t it be better to hear their story from the ones whose lives they impact everyday? Allow me to introduce Pearl and her owner, Ashley. Pearl is a very beautiful girl with a heartwarming rescue story that Ashley shares with us below.
From Ashley:
Where did she come from? How did she choose you/you choose her? What do you know about her history? “We adopted Pearl from LC4 (Lucas County Canine Care and Control). The first dog we met didn't seem overly enthusiastic about meeting us, but Pearl came in next and that was it! We didn't need to meet anyone else! She was very timid at first and actually seemed a little nervous around Jim. We gave her a minute to feel out the situation and she very sweetly, came up to me, put her front paws on my lap, and gave me a little kiss! Once she let Jim give her some lovins we started the process of fostering to adopt. We didn't know much about Pearl's history, just that LC4 had adopted her out previously and she was surrendered back to them almost a year later. What we have been able to learn about her background is what she shares with us by her reactions. Jim putting his belt on in front of her for the first time and hiding when I fold laundry, told us a lot.”
What challenges came with integrating her into your family? “I feel like it can be tough bringing any animal into a home with other animals, but especially when they're adults. We have 2 cats and weren't really sure how everyone was going to get along. Our cats have had a dog sibling before but we weren't sure what Pearl's experience was with cats so it was kind of a gamble at first. Pearl can get a little rowdy and rambunctious when she plays so 2 year old Jinxx gets out of her way, but 8 year old Hobo keeps her in check! Actually, since Pearl has become a part of our family, I think Hobo has a new favorite friend in the house! I'm no longer #1!”
In what ways has she enriched your life? “Pearl is a wonderful companion! She's our ride or die! She wants to go everywhere with us even if she isn't always pleased with our destinations! She is so snuggly and cuddly and always wants to be near us! Including making sure there's enough room for her AND the holy spirit between us bed!”
Have you owned a bully breed type dog before? What have you learned about them/her? “Bully breed is a funny term to me! We had a Neapolitan mastiff years ago and she was the most gentle giant! Pit-bull mixes come with some tough reputations, but our cocker spaniel/chihuahua mix, Molly Hatchet was a real bully! She was a 15 pound Humane Society reject that wouldn't have had a chance to be adopted because she was so fearful and aggressive. While Pearl has shown some symptoms of PTSD, our experience with Molly prepared us for Pearl's unique needs. We're looking forward to some training to help her understand that she doesn't have to be so protective of us!”
Tell us about your photoshoot experience at the Trumbull studio. “I could not be more pleased with my shoot at Trumbull Photography! I was a little nervous about a 15 minute time slot but Rebecca and Jessica are so good at what they do, they have it timed perfectly! They were so good with Pearl and gave her time to investigate and get comfortable in the studio before getting started! All the snackies made Jessica her new best friend, while Rebecca expertly snapped away, getting the best dog smiles and perfect poses! Now I want to get my cats in for their own closeups!”
